New Indigenous financial management software, bridge between two cultures

Listen

David Acco is very enthusiastic about helping Canada’s indigenous communities deal with managing finances in a way that recognizes the complexities of varied accounting needs of the community and government services.

It’s called the Native Economic Management System. It was created by Acco and the Kahnawake Economic Development Commission of the Kahnawake Mohawk community just south of the city of Montreal.

The NEM system has built in adaptability to serve indigenous needs and politics, while at the same time producing the type of data needed by numerous government agencies. In addition, it allows indigenous communities to track how well their programs are working, and what the impact of budget and management decisions were.

RCI’s Wojtek Gwiazda spoke to David Acco who is the co-founder of the consulting firm Acosys Inc.
