Mauritania releases Canadian held on terror charges

24 year-old Aaron Yoon has been released after serving roughly 18 months in a Mauritanian prison on terror-related charges. Yoon was turned over to intelligence officials for questioning and is expected to return to Canada this week.

Yoon was accused of having links to al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM). It later emerged that he had travelled to North Africa with two fellow Canadians who were involved in an attack on an Algerian gas plant in January that ended with the deaths of 37 hostages and 29 attackers.

Neither the Canadian government nor the national police, the RCMP have commented on Yoon’s release.
