Prince Edward Islanders wondering where the raspberries are?

At Jewell’s Country Market in Prince Edward Island, people are coming in looking for raspberries, and going home disappointed.

This summer there is a shortage of raspberries as farmers realized recently the crop was limited.

“All of a sudden, I came home and I said to my wife and Velma, my sister here, there’s something going on with the raspberries. We don’t see the fruit there that we normally do,” farmer Allan Coffin told CBC News

Allan Coffin suspects climate change may be having an impact on the raspberry bushes.

Allan Coffin suspects climate change may be having an impact on the raspberry bushes.

A farmer for 60 years, Allan Coffin doesn’t understand the why there isn’t an abundant harvest of berries.  He says the bushes are fine, the berries they did produce are fine, but there are just very few of them. Raspberry farmers around the Maritimes are finding the same result. Allan Coffin suspects climate change, and last year’s dry summer in particular.

“I think this might have something to do with global warming, warmer winters and that kind of thing, and I think it’s impacting negatively on some of the fruit crops,” he said.  “The problem is more climatic than anything. And we can’t fix the climate.”

Would it have anything to do with the decline of the bee population?
