Apple tree heist confounds farmer

Someone stole 140 young apple trees right out of the ground in Rougemont, Quebec, about an hour’s drive from Montreal on Friday night. The new trees were worth $1,700 but cost a few thousand dollars more to plant.

“The people who did this are idiots. The trees won’t survive this time of year. They must be drying out right now. They did it all for nothing,” said Jeannot Alix, who owns the orchard.

This is not the first time Alix has been robbed of trees. He has lost a few now and again, but never hundreds at once. His insurance will not cover the loss.

Police have abandoned the investigation saying there is not enough evidence to continue.

This is the latest in a string of weird agricultural thefts in the province of Quebec. In the past year, thieves have made off with large quantities of corn, maple syrup and garlic.
