Elections Canada’s ‘Democracy Week’ promotes voting, democracy

For the third year in a row, the agency that organizes Canadian federal elections, is organizing a week of promoting democracy and getting citizens to vote.

The theme of this year’s “Democracy Week” (September 16-23) is “Connect with Democracy”.

On the Elections Canada website, Canada’s Chief Electoral Officer Marc Mayrand urged “all Canadians to use Canada’s Democracy Week as an opportunity to do their part to keep our democracy vital. Engage in the political process, and encourage family members to inform themselves about the issues and values that make our democratic system strong. Each of us has a personal investment in our democracy, and by actively participating in it, we ensure that it is shared, protected and nourished.”

Among the planned activities “a contest that encourages Canadians between the ages of 14 and 30 to submit a video, image or piece of writing that showcases democracy in action.”

In a special “Democracy Week” video Canada’s Governor General David Johnston talks about the importance of democracy: “Democracy is vital because it gives each of us a voice. In a democracy the people decide where our country is headed, and what our values are as a nation.”

Last Friday (September 13) the Governor General agreed to a request from Prime Minister Stephen Harper to prorogue parliament, effectively shutting down parliament until October 16. Parliament was to resume September 16 after the summer break.
