Ubisoft Montreal expansion

Ubisoft‘s Montreal campus is expanding, adding a new studio and as many as 500 new jobs in the short-term, with more to come over the next five years.

This follows the announcement this morning, by Quebec Premier Pauline Marois, of a C$9.9 million Quebec government grant.

“The imminent arrival of next-generation consoles, expansion of mobile platforms, multiplication of connected, immersive and social environments, along with the strategic importance of developer-player relationships, are profoundly transforming the video-gaming industry,” Ubisoft CEO and co-founder Yves Guillemot said in a statement.

“Now we can anticipate the growth of our future needs with the achievement of strengthening proximity with our players and creating value for them.”

Described by the company as a “technological and operational consolidation”, Ubisoft Entertainment SA will centre its North American operations for online games and its global network infrastructure in Montreal and expand its motion capture technology expertise.

Ubisoft has studios in 19 countries.  It’s the third-largest independent global video-game publisher, with titles such as Assasin’s Creed and Watch Dogs to its credit.

Established in Montreal in 1996, as a development studio for console and PC video games the company now employs 2,100 people. By 2020 it foresees employment growth to 3,500 jobs.
