Finding almost-naked pictures of her teenage daughter selling sex online horrified a mother in the eastern city of Halifax.
“I felt like I died. I felt like part of me died,” said Karen. Her name has been changed to protect her identity and the identities of her family members.
The problem of underage prostitution is growing in Canada, reports the public broadcaster, the CBC, and police are seeing more girls as young as 13 being exploited.
Mom risks safety to shut down prostitution
Karen said she learned that there are at least 40 girls in her area selling their bodies for sex. She herself answered some online ads in order to collect addresses and phone numbers which she passed on to police, urging them to crack down on the problem.
She has been assaulted and threatened for her trouble, but says she is not prepared to stop trying to shut down the prostitution of young girls.
Karen took months off work to get her own daughter out of the city’s seedy underworld.
