Canada expels Russian soldiers over Ukraine crisis

Nine Russian military personnel have been given 24 hours to leave Canada following Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s announcement earlier this week that all planned joint military activities between the two countries will be suspended.

Canada has been one of the loudest critics of Russia’s intervention in Ukraine, with Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird calling it “old Soviet-style” aggression and saying there is “no justification whatsoever’ to invade another country. He ruled out any western military response but Canada made diplomatic moves to voice its displeasure, such recalling Canada’s ambassador Russia and pulling out of preparations for the G8 summit in Sochi, Russia.

Canada has a very large and pro-active Ukrainian community which has urged the Canadian government to sanction Russia for its actions in Ukraine. Baird meets with Ukrainian leaders in Montreal at 12:30 pm today.
