Opposition NDP party walks out because premier a no-show at provincial legislature

As one newspaper put it opposition NDP politicians in the province of Ontario “stormed out of the legislature” on Monday (March 31) because the province’s Liberal Premier Kathleen Wynne was absent from the provincial legislature.

The NDP which holds the balance of power in Canada’s most populous province was upset the premier was not in the legislature for the Question Period to answer questions about a criminal investigation into a $1.1 billion gas plant scandal involving the previous Liberal government of Premier Dalton McGuinty.

“We basically have decided to refuse to participate in Question Period today,” said Ontario NDP leader Andrea Horwath.

The premier’s office said the premier had a pre-arranged commitment in the city of Sault-Ste-Marie, but would be in the legislature on Tuesday for the Question Period.
