‘Outrageous Fortune’ report says Canada’s 86 richest getting richer

Listen

Canada’s 86 richest Canadians’ wealth, whose net worth was $178 billion in 2012, equals that of 11.4 million Canadians (out of a population of 35 million) according to a new report by the Ottawa think tank, the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives (CCPA).

The report, “Outrageous Fortune: Documenting Canada’s Wealth Gap”, says the wealth gap is even bigger than Canada’s income gap. The richest 20% of families take almost 50% of all income. But when it comes to wealth, almost 70% of Canadian wealth belongs to the wealthiest 20%.

Only 10 of Canada’s 100 highest paid CEOs are part of “The Wealthy 86”.

RCI’s Wojtek Gwiazda spoke to the author of the “Outrageous Fortune” report CCPA Senior Economist David Macdonald about the wealth gap and what it means for Canada.
