Canada’s Leilani Farha has been chosen by the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC) to be the UN Special Rapporteur on adequate housing. Farha is the Executive Director of the not-for-profit group Canada Without Poverty (CWP).
In the deliberations towards her appointment a consultative group of the Council wrote it “was impressed by Ms. Farha’s passion for ensuring the progressive realization of the right to adequate housing and her pragmatic approach, including an emphasis on operational implementation of existing standards, multistakeholder engagement and inclusivity in policy design.”
In his statement announcing her appointment the President of the Council Baudelaire Ndong Ella wrote of Farha: “I decided following consultations to appoint Ms. Leilani FARHA from Canada for that position given her extensive experience in the field of economic, social and cultural rights, in particular the right to adequate housing.”
