‘Range anxiety’ limits use of electric cars

While environmentalists would like people to switch to electric vehicles, many Canadians worry they will not make it to the still-rare charging stations. The average range of these vehicles is about 60 kilometers before they need a recharge.

Canada is a big place. Distances are great and only now are more charging stations beginning to appear.

Another concern is that batteries are less efficient in winter at the same time as heat is needed inside the car to keep people warm, so energy is used up more rapidly.

Best Western Hotels are offering high-voltage charging stations free of charge, and some Longo grocery locations also have them. The car company Tesla is planning to install its brand of superchargers in June along highways in the provinces of Ontario and British Columbia. More will come in Quebec and Alberta later this summer.

As of the end of April , there were around 6,600 plug-in cars on Canadian roads. Another obstacle to their use is that they are much more expensive than gasoline-powered vehicles.
