It’s not often that a reastaurant bill leaves you pleasantly surprised, but that was the case for a family in the western Canadian city of Calgary Alberta
The husband, wife, and their almost one-year-old daughter went to a small Japanese restaurant in the city to celebrate Mother’s day. When the bill came, they noticed a $5 reduction for “well-behaved children”
The mother, Alicia Maxim-Welsh told the CBC, “It was a really, really nice surprise to top off a really nice brunch.”
However, she is also quoted in the British Daily Mail as saying, that baby Evie, “..is like most babies, she has her on and off days. We avoid taking her out if she’s fussy.”
Restaurant owner Toshi Carino told CBC News he has had the “well-behaved kids” policy for about a year. He told Yahoo Shine, ‘We welcome the kids and wanted to show some appreciation for kids (of course for parents!) with dining manners.”
He says with 35 tables in a small restaurant like his, the tables are close together so “well-mannered” children are appreciated.
When an impressed Daley Welsh posted the story and photos on Reddit, it received 3,000 comments in one day.
Most were supportive of the restaurant, but it has stirred controversy with some seeing it as an insult to parents who can’t predict when their kids will act up, and who say children sometimes acting up is just normal childhood behaviour.
