Canadian Open underway

It’s been 60 years since a Canadian has won the Canadian Open.  This year could be the year to make Canadian golf history.

Mike Weir, 44, one of 19 Canadians in the running, told CBC Sports in an interview today, “It’s going to end at some point, so hopefully, if not myself, it’s another Canadian that gets it done this week,” From the Royal Montreal, the site of this year’s open, Weir said. “It would be nice to get the streak over so we don’t have to talk about it.”

This is Weir’s 24th Canadian Open, “So I’ve been at it a long time,” he said.  “But every time you come back it’s special. It was the first professional event I watched live as a kid. I still remember doing a junior clinic with Andy Bean and Tom Kite and being one of the kids on the range that got to walk up there and get close to those guys. That really spurred my interest in professional golf.”

Weir is an eight-time winner on the PGA Tour and he beat Tiger Woods in singles at Royal Montreal in the 2007 Presidents Cup.  On his blog he described this as, “the best week in Canadian golf”.

Graham DeLaet, 32, of Weyburn, Saskatchewan, David Hearn, 35, of Brampton, Ontario, and Stephen Ames,50, of Calgary, Alberta are some of the Canadians to watch.
