Canada needs a comprehensive national seniors care strategy, says the new head of the Canadian Medical Association, the country’s largest association of doctors. Dr. Chris Simpson says “Canadians are tired of excuses as to why the federal government can’t take action (on this issue).”
Older Canadians are being “warehoused” in hospitals, costing $2.3 billion a year, he says, when they should be in facilities designed to rehabilitate them.
Simpson promises to make the problem an election issue in the federal election expected in 2015.
A large segment of the Canadian population was born after the end of World War II. Many people are now getting to the age where they will need more medical care.
