Activists take aim at deer hunt

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is protesting a hunt that would allow 200 permits to bag urban deer in the Kennebecasis area, in the eastern province of New Brunswick.

The animal rights group informed many of its members and 6,000 of them sent emails protesting the hunt.

There are about 88,000 deer in the province just ahead of the annual hunting season. This area has about 10 deer per square kilometre. By comparison, the town of Fredricton only has one deer per square kilometre. Many residents say the deer are a big problem.

Most of the permits will require hunting with a bow and PETA says that is one of the cruellest forms of hunting.

Bob Doucet is a town councillor in the area and chair of the Kennebecasis Deer Committee. He says he understands the concerns but has confidence in the abilities of New Brunswick hunters.
