Canada’s Justice Minister photographed wearing pro-gun lobby T-shirt

Canada’s Justice Minister Peter MacKay is being both praised and criticized for wearing a “No Compromise” T-shirt sold by Canada’s National Firearms Association (NFA), a member of the international pro-gun lobby.

The Minister put on the T-shirt and posed for a photo at a Conservative Party fundraiser last week. MacKay says: “A Canadian veteran wounded in Afghanistan approached me at an event in Edmonton, handed me one of his T-shirts and asked if I would pose for a photo,”

However on the Facebook page of the association, NFA field officer Ericka Clarke (who posed with the Minister) wrote: “No photo shop! I was there he wore the shirt for real and I gave it to him plus a pin.”

On the same page a person describing themselves as serving in Afghanistan wrote “He’s awesome, and putting on that shirt proves it.”

But there were also criticisms.

The Official Opposition NDP party’s ethics critic Charlie Angus said the incident raised serious questions: “For Peter MacKay to wear one of their T-shirts when they are calling for the stripping of all the gun laws in the country and then later say he didn’t know? . . . He is either being very cynical or he’s just not very bright.”
