Canada Revenue Agency should halt audit of think tank, say 400 academics

More than 400 Canadian academics have signed a letter calling for a moratorium on an audit by Canada’s Revenue Agency (CRA) of the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives (CCPA) saying that accusations that the CCPA is politically partisan and biased are unfounded.

“While we understand the need to prevent abuses of the charitable status, we are rather perplexed at CRA’s decision to perform the audit on this basis,” says the letter addressed to the Minister of National Revenue Kerry-Lynne Findlay and Kathy Hawara, the Director General of the Charities Division of the Canada Revenue Agency.

The academics also point out that “We are not aware of any audits being launched regarding “bias” at conservative think tanks…”

RCI’s Wojtek Gwiazda spoke to Mario Seccareccia, a professor of economics at the University of Ottawa, and one of the academics who drafted the letter.
