Teacher suspended over homophobic prank

A teacher has been suspended because of a homophobic prank he played on a high school student last year in Langley,  a Vancouver municipality in the western province of British Columbia. Daniel Mark Ogloff is a metal and machining teacher and has had received previous warnings because of comments he made to students in Grade 7 and others to a Grade 12 student in class.

In the latest incident, Ogloff wrote “I’m gay. Lol.” On a piece of masking tape and stuck it to the back of a male student’s jacket. Other students took pictures and laughed.

School authorities suspended Ogloff without pay for 10 weeks last November saying he had acted unprofessionally and disrespectfully.  His teaching certificate has been suspended for two weeks.

LGBT activists say the incident indicates that even though there are laws in Canada protecting people from discrimination and harassment, there are still people who persist in plaguing gays.
