Correctional officers fighting Canadian government’s ‘anti-union attacks’

Canada’s unionized correctional officers began a campaign to fight what they call the “anti-union attacks” of the ruling Conservative government of Prime Minister Stephen Harper. As part of this campaign, on Tuesday (Septemebr 30) correctional officers talked directly to voters in the federal riding of Ottawa West-Nepean.

“We have reached a point of no return with this government,” said Kevin Grabowsky, National President of the Union of Canadian Correctional Officers (UCCO-SACC-CSN). “That’s why we are going directly to the public to explain why Harper’s anti-union attacks are anti-Canadian.”

The union points to recent amendments to the Canada Labour Code as an example. The amendments weaken the definition of “danger” in a workplace. The correctional officers say they are directly targeted by this change, as the old definition was crucial to making their workplace safer and more secure.

Under the slogan “Danger Ahead,” the union is planning numerous activities over the coming months in their campaign against the government.
