Canada’s public broadcaster CBC wins International Emmy for Bangladesh documentary

The fifth estate a news show produced by Canada’s national public broadcaster CBC has won a 2014 International Emmy Award for its documentary on the Rana Plaza garment factory collapse in Bangladesh.

The documentary Made in Bangladesh was first aired in October 2013.

It not only found that dangerous working conditions remained widespread in the Bangladeshi garment industry after the accident which killed 1,000 people, it also found the industry continued to supply major retailers in Canada such as Loblaw and Wal-Mart, despite commitments by the companies to make improvements.

In making the award Tuesday (September 30) Bruce L. Paisner, President & CEO of the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences underlined the importance of making documentaries such as Made in Bangladesh: “In these dangerous and unsettled times, the need for high quality news has never been so great.”
