More money to fight Ebola, more preparation in Canada, says health minister

Canada’s Health Minister Rona Ambrose announced Canada would give another $30 million dollars to the United Nations mission to fight the Ebola outbreak in West Africa. In a press conference Friday (October 17) she also addressed concerns in Canada from nurses and others about Canada’s preparedness to deal with the virus.

“Today I am announcing…that Canada is responding directly to the request from Ban Ki-moon and the United Nations,” said the Minister as she announced the new funding.

Dr. Gregory Taylor, Canada’s Chief Public Health Officer, who was with the Minister at the press conference, acknowledged that more work has to be done for health precautions in Canada, but suggested that the Canadian medical system was well-versed in infection control, despite the concerns raised by some nurses unions about preparations against the Ebola virus.
