Emigrating? Best country list

It’s called the HSBC Expat Explorer Report listing what expats from over 100 countries have to say about their new countries.

It seems there are about 3 million Canadians living abroad, and this new survey says Canada is a fairly good place to move to, whether to work or retire, although the survey puts Switzerland on top.

Although expats who chose Canada say it has a lot going for it, including security, good schools, ease of integration and so on, but due to other factors such as earning potential and disposable income, it still only ranked 11th,

The survey polled expats from over 100 countries on 43 criteria. There were 9,288, including 496 in Canada who took part in the online survey in April and May of this year.

. This year, 34 countries qualified for the league table.  The Expat Explorer league table ranks each country using a score that summarizes expats’ overall impression of the country. The Expat Explorer score is the average of the Expat Economics, Expat Experience and Raising Children Abroad scores, covering 43 different criteria from the survey. Countries are scored on a scale of zero to one(in increments of 0.1), with the highest score ranking first and the lowest ranking last. All scores have been rounded to two decimal points.

Switzerland came out on top with respondents saying it had good career advancement prospects, good pay along with a good work/life balance. Clean air and pleasant surroundings also were mentioned, with 75% saying it was a better place than their country of origin.

Asia seemed to be the place to go to for those seeking to increase earning potential,

As for Canada, it seems to be a good place to retire with almost a third of the expats identifying as “retired”, which is the highest proportion of expat retirees in the survey and well above the average or one in ten..  In fact, 8 in 10 retired expats display significant confidence in Canada’s economy by choosing to keep the majority of their retirement investments in Canada — almost double the global average (41%).

For expat parents, they feel their children are safer and healthier here, and have confidence in enrolling their children in the Canadian school system.

As for “ fitting in”, six in ten expats say it was easy to make local friends and almos half say they spend more time socializing with Canadians than with other expats, and nine in ten say they feel a close connection with the country, well above the global average of 62%.
