Attack on Parliament was politically motivated

A day after his mother denied Michael Zehaf-Bibeau attacked Parliament for political reasons, police said they found a video proving he was driven by political and ideological motive.

On Wednesday, October 22, 2014, Zehaf-Bibeau shot and killed a soldier guarding the National War Memorial, then stormed the main Parliament building. After injuring one guard, he ran down a corridor passing two rooms full of members of Parliament, and was finally shot dead by the Sergeant-at-Arms.

There have been reports that Zehaf-Bibeau was mentally ill and had struggled with drugs. He had converted to Islam and his mother said he had wanted to travel to Saudi Arabia to study the Koran. But the commissioner of the national police, the RCMP issued a statement saying police had uncovered “persuasive evidence” of his motivation. He went on to say he could not release a video that was made shortly before the attack or give more details about it at this time.

The statement went on to say “The RCMP is also investigating Zehaf-Bibeau’s interactions with numerous individuals in the days leading up to this attack. The investigation is focusing on whether these interactions could have contributed or facilitated, in any way, the terrorist attack subsequently committed by Zehaf-Bibeau.”
