Money for embassy security not spent: CBC

Millions of dollars committed to boosting security at Canadian diplomatic missions abroad were not spent, according to the public broadcaster, CBC.  A special report linked the lack of spending to government efforts to cut programs and staff to eliminate the country’s deficit.

CBC reporters found that the department of foreign affairs failed to spend almost half of the $129 million budgeted for “strengthening security missions abroad,” and the shortfalls were in the millions in the two years previous as well. This comes at a time of increased threats to Canada posed by ISIS and other terror groups.

The government responded to the report by saying the funds were meant for long-term projects to increase security and that it continues to explore those.
