The U.S. State of Alaska has cancelled bids to upgrade a Canadian ferry terminal until it can settle a trade dispute over a “Buy America” policy. The state leases land and operates the terminal at Prince Rupert on Canada’s Pacific coast as part of its Alaska Marine Highway System.
The upgrade is funded in part by the U.S. Federal Highway Administration which requires steel, iron and manufactured products to be made in the U.S. The Canadian government called the requirement to use only U.S. steel on Canadian soil unacceptable. It suggested that Alaska seek a waiver.
A spokesperson for the Alaska governor’s office told Associated Press that the state can maintain normal operations at the port “over the next several years until this is sorted out.”
