Government MP uses parliamentary privilege to put on record accusations against Muslim group

A Canadian government Member of Parliament used her parliamentary privilege to suggest a Canadian Muslim organization had links to terrorists during a House of Commons committee hearing Thursday (March 12).

The committee hearing was looking into proposed anti-terrorism legislation that would give Canadian authorities wide-ranging powers of spying on Canadians, sharing information, committing illegal acts, and disrupting threats to national security. There are serious questions being raised also, despite government denials, about whether public demonstrations and protests could in some situations justify spying on the organizers or worse.

However, Ablonczy took her question time of witnesses to put on record a number of allegations against the National Council of Canadian Muslims.

RCI’s Wojtek Gwiazda has a report.
