Subway shut-down in Toronto due to mysterious leak

Subway commuters were stranded on one of the main lines in Toronto today.  The north-south line that takes tens of thousands of people into the downtown offices each morning, was halted when a mysterious substance was discovered leaking into the tunnel.

TTC CEO Andy Byford went to see the problem for himself.  In an interview with CBC he said he was struck by two things: “Number one, we weren’t talking about dripping — this was this as-yet-unidentified liquid pouring through the roof onto the track bed.”  Byford said the second thing he noticed was the “overwhelming smell of either diesel or gasoline or kerosene.”

Tests revealed the liquid was not dangerous, but Byford said they could not take the chance without confirmation. The leak was sealed and the liquid washed away and several trains were sent through the tunnel to check the signals and system.  Commuters were able to take the trains home this evening, but the source and the substance of the leak has yet to be found.
