Mayor calls federal, provincial response to oil spill in Vancouver ‘totally inadequate’

Gregor Robertson was clearly not a happy man when he met journalists on Friday (April 10). The mayor of Canada’s port city of Vancouver was upset by what he called the “totally inadequate” response from both the provincial and federal authorities to an oil spill off the coast of the city on Wednesday night.

He criticized “the lack of leadership, from the federal and provincial government to make sure that these efforts are coordinated, that there’s an immediate response to an oil spill in Vancouver’s waters, regardless of the scale of it, and that response was lacking.”

As city authorities warned residents about a toxic bunker fuel spill in the city’s English Bay and told people not to touch the oil, they were also surprised by the delay in getting any clear information about the spill.
