Canada’s Prime Minister Stephen Harper and India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi were both keen on emphasizing the growing importance of the relationship between their two countries at a press conference Wednesday (April 15) on Parliament Hill in Ottawa.
The two announced a number of agreements, including a uranium export deal to India, and improvements for the handling of visas for Canadians visiting India. And there were more promises of future Canada-India trade.
The Indian Prime Minister will also visit Toronto and Vancouver. Most of the mood among the Indo-Canadian community and Canadian business interests is very upbeat. However, protests against Prime Miniister Modi are planned because of controversy over what role he played as chief minister of the Indian state of Gujarat when some 1000 Muslims were killed in riots in 2002. His ultra-pro Hindu stance, so visible before his election as Prime Minister, also concerns some in both India and Canada.
