Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid his respects at the Air India Memorial on Toronto’s Lake Shore this morning.
Accompanied by Prime Minister Harper, the Indian leader made his way along a pathway, through the butterfly sanctuary, to the stone sundial and granite wall with the names of the vicitims engraved
The site commemorates the terrorist acts perpetrated by Sikh militants. The bombings took the lives of the 329 passengers and crew on board Air India Flight 192 on June 23, 1985, as well as the baggage handlers at the Narita airport.
The Boeing 747 aircraft was operating on the Montreal, Canada – London, UK – Delhi, India route. It exploded at 31,000 feet in Irish airspace, and fell into the Atlantic Ocean off the southwest coast of Ireland.
268 of the passengers were Canadian citizens, most of Indian descent. This year will mark the 30th anniversary of the tragedy. In Canada, the day is now an occasion to remember the victims of terrorism.
