PM Harper announces next Chief of Defence Staff is Lt.-Gen. Jonathan Vance

Canada’s next Chief of Defence Staff will be Lieutenant-General Jonathan Vance, a veteran commander of Canada’s Afghanistan mission, and presently in charge of Canada’s participation in the coalition fighting the Islamic State.

The announcement was made by Prime Minister Stephen Harper Monday morning (April 27) at a photo opportunity for the media with Defence Minister Jason Kenney and General Vance.

“General Vance has served the Canadian Forces for 33 years, ” said the Prime Minister. “And is taking over, obviously, at an important time, an important institution, an important time, where we’re…part of the international coalition against the so-called Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.”

General Vance will replace the current Chief of Defence Staff, General Tom Lawson, who will step down as Canada’s top general by September.He has held the position since October, 2012.
