Fahmy calls for more protection for journalists

The Fahmy Foundation held its first rally Sunday, May 3, 2015 in Vancouver in support of world press freedom. The foundation was created by Canadian journalist Mohamed Fahmy who is facing widely-discredited terror-related charges in Egypt. He was working for Al-Jazeera English at the time.

After spending more than 400 days in a Cairo prison, Fahmy is now out on bail with his next trial date set for May 9. He set up the foundation in February 2015 to provide financial assistance and support to other journalists who have been incarcerated. Among them are Jason Rezaian detained in Iran, photojournalist Mahmoud Abou Zeid imprisoned in Egypt, Ahmed Ziada also held in Egypt and  Qatari poet Mohamed Al-Ajami.

Fahmy notes that in 2014, 61 reporters and photographers were killed because of their work as journalists.

Fahmy was interviewed by the public broadcaster, CBC, on the subject of World Press Freedom Day. Listen here.
