Teachers and students back in class after Ontario strike halted

Teachers were back in the classroom today after a moratorium on their strikes, in three regions of Ontario left more than 70,000 high school students out of school for three weeks.

The main issue in the Toronto areas of Peel and Durham, and the Sudbury-area Rainbow district, is class size.

The Ontario Labour Relations Board ruled the job actions illegal earlier this week, and the provincial Education Minister, Liz Sandals, is working on back-to-work legislation.

In the meantime, students may have some cramming to do to complete the school year.

Rameen Ahmed, a Grade 12 student, at Lorne Park Secondary School in Mississauga, Ontario was surprised with the devlopments.

“It was a bit of a shock, but we’re back so we might as well make the best of it,” she told CBC News. “I just hope I remember everything in time for exams.”

Other students were relieved that they will likely be able to graduate as planned.

“I’m frustrated that we lost three weeks of learning but I’m happy we won’t have to go into the summer,” said Kennedy Moore, another Grade 12 student at Lorne Park.

“Hopefully we will graduate on time and go off to university next year.”
