British Columbia Day, Saskatchewan Day, New Brunswick Day, the first Monday in August is a holiday for many Canadians. In the province of Manitoba it’s now known as Terry Fox Day.

Prince Edward Island, Nunavut and the North West Territories just call it a Civic Holiday and enjoy the occasion.

In Ontario, the largest and most-populated province, the holiday is has several names depending on the town and the place. Government employees are given the day off, but it is not an official holiday for everyone.

Many Canadians take the opportunity to celebrate something as the days of summer begin to wind down. In some provinces, children are heading back to school in three weeks.

In Toronto, the annual Caribana Festival was interupted by a fierce storm that cancelled the Veld Music Festival as well. The weather system left more than 50 thousand homes and businesses in Ontario without power today. And many people are busy cleaning up and taking stock after the system that brought brief tornados.
