Overhead is a dark, menancing cloud that fills most of the sky in the photo. To the left, we see pale, yellow sky.

Severe storms and a tornado hit southern Ontario

Things are returning to normal in southwest and southern Ontario after severe storms, including a tornado, struck the region on Sunday evening.

The tornado struck the community of Teviotdale, northwest of Kitchener, wrecking two homes and damaging barns and cars, including some parked Ontario Provincial Police cruisers.

The Enhanced Fujita Scale rates tornadoes from “light” to “incredible.” Environment Canada rated Sunday’s tornado as “moderate,” meaning winds ranged from 138 to 177 kilometres per hour.

The storm knocked out power to some 50,000 customers in the region and caused some flooding in Toronto.

Hydro Crews have now restored electricity to all but about 5,000 customers.
