When police catch criminals, one might ask; was it due to excellent police work, or in some cases, the criminals make some dumb, really dumb mistakes?
First thing for criminals to keep in mind is, don’t attempt a robbery when you are highly intoxicated..
Second, probably a good idea to have a planned escape method.
Two people in Regina, the capital of the western province of Saskatchewan will have time to think about that after being sentenced on Friday for a crime committed in May.
Kevin Asapace, 24, and Joseph Nicholas Littlecrow (who will turn 19 while in jail) will spend seven more months in jail, followed by a 12-month probabation period.
The two were charged with breaking into a residence they thought was unoccupied.
Thirdly, just because a house is dark and quiet in the wee small hours of the morning does not mean no-one is home. As with the vast majority of homes at that hour, the occupants might just be sleeping.
Indeed, the female homeowner was awakened as the duo broke in, but continued to feign sleep even as they rummaged around her house and bedroom.
When they left she called police,
Meanwhile, the two men with their pockets and arms loaded, had no getaway vehicle to carry the loot. They decided to call a taxi in order to make their escape..
The cab driver became just a little suspicious when he picked up two inebriated men with their arms full of an odd assortment of goods (about $5,000 worth) outside a house at 4 am.
Police were already on their way when alerted by the taxi driver. The culprits were quickly arrested as they sat in the taxi.
At the Friday trial, the defence lawyer said the robbery was a spur of the moment thing for the two very intoxicated men. He said Littlecrow now wants to upgrade his education and create a positive future for himself.
However, when asked by the judge if he had anything to say, Littlecrow remained silent. In addition to his sentence, the judge then ordered him to write an apology to the victim whom the duo must have “terrified” during the robbery. The judge added that the apology would be delivered only if a probation officer felt it to be sincere.
