Tax banks, big oil, demands political party

The Bloc Quebecois is calling for higher taxes for banks and oil companies in the name of what its leader calls fiscal justice. This political party is running candidates in the French-speaking province of Quebec during this federal election campaign. In general, it aims to secure more power for the province, if not its complete independence from the rest of Canada.

Oil pays less tax than in Texas

Bloc leader Gilles Duceppe says banks and oil companies are not contributing their fair share. He notes big oil in Canada pays lower taxes than it does in Texas and it receives more government grants here. He also says the net income of Canada’s big financial institutions increased to $33 billion in 2014 at the same time as their tax rates dropped. Both sectors, he says, should pay a tax rate of 20 per cent.

Duceppe says the government could take measures to prevent the banks from passing on the increase to clients through increased fees. He adds: “Workers and families are experiencing greater and greater financial insecurity and businesses are not doing their fair share.”
