Order of Canada Investiture Ceremony for 44 Canadians

The Order of Canada ceremony took place in Ottawa this morning and 44 Canadians now have, along with the cermonial medal on a ribbon, a little pin they will proudly wear, most of them, for the rest of their lives.

Created in 1967, Canada’s Centennial year, the Order of Canada recognizes outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the nation.

Canada now has more than 6 000 people, from all sectors of society, who have been invested into the Order, honoured for their work.

Among the recipients today were, two much-loved CBC personalities: Eleanor Wachtel, host of the radio programs, Wachtel on the Arts, and Writers & Company, which features fascinating conversations with great writers from around the world.

Rick Mercer is a CBC television personality known for his serious rants on his funny show, ‘the Rick Mercer Report‘.

The comedian from Newfoundland has applied his acerbic wit to the many goings-on in Canada from a rant on the state of democracy to a campaign to buy anti-malaria nets for Africa, Mercer always entertains as he educates.

Other recipients were, film-maker Sarah Polley, who was also promoted to Officer, musicians Chantal Kreviazuk and Raine Maida of the the band, Our Lady Peace, were invested as Members of the Order of Canada.

Michael MacMillan a digital media visionary and charity innovator, and Gary Slaight, now a philanthropist and supporter of emerging musical talent, are also now members of the Order of Canada.
