School trips cancelled over terrorism fears

A school board in western Canada has cancelled all international trips planned for its students citing the recent terrorist attacks in Paris and California. High schools across Canada often organize trips abroad for their students and encourage fundraisers to help pay for them. This is regarded as a good educational experience.

But the Edmonton Catholic School District has informed staff that 20 trips that had been planned for this school year have been cancelled due to safety concerns. The Calgary Catholic School District has cancelled its trips as well but did not refer to terrorism in announcing its decision.

Insurance organization warns of danger

The Globe and Mail reports that the organization that provides insurance for school boards in the province of Alberta sent a bulletin warning about the dangers presented by ISIS.

On its travel website the government of Canada has not issued a travel advisory for France or Belgium but advises travellers they “should exercise a high degree of caution due to the current elevated threat of terrorism.” For the United States it says there is no nationwide advisory,  but it advises travellers “exercise normal security precautions.”
