Stuck on Grouse Mountain still trending

High winds trapped more than 300 people on top of Grouse Mountain in western Canada last Saturday and it is still the most watched news on the public broadcaster, CBC’s website.

Popular mountain close to downtown

Grouse Mountain is only 25 minutes from downtown Vancouver and is a popular destination for skiers, skaters and families. There were “Peak of Christmas” festivities going on last weekend.

Access to the mountain is by a main gondola which was shut down between 11:30pm Saturday to about 5am Sunday because of winds reaching 100km/hour. About 50cm of snow fell in 48 hours.

Not too much hardship

More than 300 guests and staff had to stay overnight, but it does not appear to have been much of a hardship. They had access to a lovely, heated lodge with movies, food and hot chocolate provided.

CBC posted several pictures of the situation and comments which have been extensively viewed. It noted that after getting back down from the mountain, “one boy asked if he could go up and do that again.” Some people however reportedly expressed frustration on Twitter.

Losing hope for a white Christmas

Western and eastern Canada have received copious amounts of snow, while Canadians in southern Ontario and Quebec have had unseasonably warm weather and are losing hope for the usual white Christmas.
