Museums neglected, need upgrading: officials

Officials responsible for Canada’s museums are urging the new government to spend tens of millions of dollars on them because they are in need of urgent repair, reports the Globe and Mail newspaper. When they campaigned for office, Liberals promised millions would be spent on infrastructure and, now that they are in office, requests for funding abound.

Three quarters of the museums in Canada were built more than 35 years ago and briefing notes provided to the minister responsible suggest they need upgrading. The government is responsible for six national museums and the Globe reports they are underfunded by $20-million per year.

The government plans to spend $20-billion on social infrastructure but has not said exactly where it will go. The federal budget is expected to be tabled in March.
