Concordia University receives a generous thank you

Concordia University is the recipient of Hardeep Grewal’s gratitude. The former graduate is giving $1 million dollars (Cdn) to the University, to fund MBA scholarships for students in the John Molson School of Business.

Hardeep Grewal, now 60, had arrived in Canada in from his native India in 1972 on a student visa. With just $7 dollars (Cdn) to his name, and no French and very little English, he began his education at Dawson College

The former Montrealer who now lives with his family in California, received his Bachelor of Commerce degree in 1983. He credits Concordia’s flexible schedule, which allowed him to work driving a taxi to pay the bills, while he pursued his education.

“Because of that degree, I was able to get a visa, and a work permit and eventually a green card,” he explained to local radio host, Aaron Rand of CJAD.

In 1989 Grewal and his wife bought a Subway restaurant. Now, “we manage over 2000, 2100 (restaurant franchises),” he said.

Concordia has renamed the lofty atrium of the John Molson School of Business in recognition of the family’s gift. It is now officially. “the Hardeep (Hardy) Singh Grewal and Patwant Kaur Grewal Atrium”.
