Taste of Edmonton: largest food festival still growing

The “Taste of Edmonton” began in 1984 with 16 vendors sharing their fare. Now, in it’s 32nd year, the festival of food has become the largest in Canada.

‘I’m addicted to it. I do it for 10 days. I’m here every day, every night for 10 whole days.’

The vendors, numbering nearly 70 in total, take over the city’s Sir Winston Churchill Square, allowing people to try the different offerings of the city’s increasingly diverse cuisine.

Normand Campbell is one of the originals. The local restarauteur began offering his “Bison Kebabs” or Buffalo Kebabs, the first year and he’s been back each year since.

‘I’m addicted to it. I do it for 10 days. I’m here every day, every night for 10 whole days.’ Campbell says.

He says the spirit of the event is wonderful. He told CBC News that the vendors trade dishes allowing them to try new flavours.

“You get hungry. You can’t eat your own food for 10 days,” he said, laughing.

Last week as he was ending the day, Campbell watched the Ethiopian restaurateurs, behind Langano Skies, setting up a picnic table near their stand, with the leftovers of their day, for the city’s homeless population.

“It was heartwarming”, Campbell said.
