Jennifer Welsh to deliver CBC Massey lectures

Jennifer Welsh, a former United Nations adviser, will deliver the 2016 CBC Massey Lecture Series.

Titled, The Return of History: Conflict, Migration, and Geopolitics in the Twenty-First Century, Welsh will explore the themes of war, terrorism, inequality and mass migration and look into the failure of liberal democracy.

Jennifer Welsh is a professor and chair of international relations at the European University Institute in Florence, Italy. She is a fellow of Somerville College, Oxford, and has researched global politics, post-conflict reconstruction, and the notion of sovereignty.

She served as the UN Secretary General’s Special Adviser on the Responsibility to Protect until earlier this year.

The Massey Lecture tour, an annual event, will begin in Winnipeg on Sept. 21, and continue on to Vancouver (Sept. 23), Saskatoon (Sept. 24), Halifax (Oct. 5) and Toronto (Oct. 7).

The lectures will be broadcast on CBC Radio’s Ideas from Oct 31-Nov 4. The book of The Return of History will be available on Sept. 17.
