Hells Angels renaissance in Montreal

Hells Angels gathered in Montreal on Saturday for the funeral of Kenny Bedard, signalling a re-emergence of the biker gang linked to organized crime.

“These guys are returning”

Bedard, 51, had just recently become a full member of the gang when he was killed in a road accident in New Brunswick in July. Hundreds of gang members came to Montreal for the funeral in the Pointe-Saint-Charles neighbourhood.

The Hells Angels have been rebuilding in Montreal since the far-reaching 2009 police operation that led to the arrests of more than 150 members. The funeral, however, was an opportunity for law enforcement to observe the developments.

Pierre de Champlain, a historian of organized crime in Montreal, told CBC News, “It was a chance for the bikers to show that they’re close to each other and at the same time, a demonstration of their strength to other bikers who are their enemies.”

He said it demonstrates that, “Us bikers, we are in control of the territory in terms of the sale of drugs.”

Guy Ryan is a former organized crime investigator with the Montreal police. In an interview with CBC, he said, “These guys are returning.” He said, “They will start reconquering their territory and selling drugs.”
