Montreal latest to ban new pit bulls

The city of Montreal will soon forbid the acquisition of pit bulls on its territory in response to attacks by this breed of dog. Several other municipalities in Canada have banned them as has the province of Ontario.

In Montreal, current owners must register and tag their pit bulls by January 1, 2017 or they will be seized. A new bylaw will also set out strict rules when walking the animals and prohibit ownership by anyone under 18 or who has a criminal record involving violence.

The issue of banning specific breeds of dog is controversial. Owners say there is no proof pit bulls are more dangerous than other dogs. The head of Montreal’s Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is opposed to the ban.
