Rush gets Key to Toronto

Rush, the Canadian band behind the international hits like Tom Sawyer, Closer to the Heart and YYZ, will be given a key to the city of Toronto, Mayor John Tory announced Thursday.

Tory will present the key to band members Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson on Saturday when the city opens the new Lee Lifeson Art Park in the Willowdale area of the city. Neil Peart, the drummer, will also be honoured but isn’t expected to attend the event.

“Rush has played a vital role in defining Toronto’s musical identity and given so much to our city through their music, live performances and their generous support for charities,” Tory said in a news release.

Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson grew up in Toronto and maintained strong connections to the city. They have been generous supporters of the city’s food banks.

Rush has been together for over 40 years and sold millions of records worldwide. The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013.
