Bugs on the menu?  No it’s not some tiny creature crawling across a menu, the bugs are the menu.

In a world where the population is growing, and resources to grow food are becoming scarcer, an ancient solution may be the new solution.

Eat insects.

Ian Toews is the director, cinematographer, and one of the producers of the new documentary Bugs on the Menu

Listen

For centuries humans have eaten insects and still do in many parts of the world. It’s only recently that in many western countries the idea has fallen drastically from favour.

But why eat bugs?

Well as the film points out, not only are bugs an extremely healthy sources of protein, vitamins, calcium, amino acids and so on, and more so than in fruits, vegetables, and meats, but raising bugs commercially is a far better food source in terms of its environmental footprint.

The film will be broadcast on CBC’s documentary Channel  Tuesday, October 11 at 9 pm ET/6 pm PT, and repeated Sunday, October 16 at 9pm ET/10 pm PT

Internationally, Ian Toews says the film is currently travelling the film festival circuit, and says it may soon get picked up by some European and American broadcasters.
