CETA signed in Belgium

CETA, the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement between Canada and the European Union, got approval from all of Belgium’s legislatures today, clearing the way for a signing ceremony that is reportedly going to take place on Sunday.

Paul Magnette, the minister-president of the region, presented an amended version to the Walloon MPs this morning.  He said the amendments guaranteed the “highest level” of standards in social, environmental or agricultural norms, “despite its flaws.”

“The amended and corrected CETA is more just than the old CETA. It offers more guarantees and it is what I will defend,” Magnette told his parliament.

Following the signing ceremony the agreement proceeds to the European Parliament for a ratification vote.
